Don Hall Video Column: FTC, DMV, and Workforce Pipeline

May 2026

The dealerships that embrace change are the dealerships that succeed.

Right now, our industry is navigating major shifts: Workforce challenges, technology modernization , and new federal pricing enforcement standards.

Dealers should continue paying close attention to the FTC’s Total Price enforcement efforts. While change can sometimes be challenging, transparency and consistency ultimately benefit both dealerships and consumers.

A new resource for VADA dealers to create a pipeline of talent

One of the biggest long-term issues facing our business is the shortage of technicians. The average age of today’s technician is climbing, and we must do a better job of bringing young people into our industry. That’s why VADA is continuing to invest heavily in career and technical education partnerships across the Commonwealth. We want students, parents and educators to understand that automotive retail offers outstanding long-term careers with strong earning potential and real opportunity.

To that end, I'm excited to welcome Billy Hobbs to the VADA team. Billy has spent a lifetime in dealerships, from FixedOps to leadership, and he understands this business inside and out. His focus will be helping dealers strengthen relationships with local schools, internship programs, and workforce pipelines across Virginia. Email him at bhobbs@vada.com to learn how your store can get involved.

Welcome to our new DMV commissioner, Sandy Jack

At the same time, we are entering a new era at DMV with Commissioner Saundra "Sandy" Jack. Virginia has an opportunity to continue leading nationally in electronic titling and modernization efforts that create a smoother experience for both dealers and customers. We look forward to working with the commissioner and her team as these improvements continue.
